What a great group of people at POCHA of Oak Lawn. If you are in or near that area then please join them. They offer meetings and speakers. Support group leaders also receive IFAEA materials in advance of mailings.

Back to School. If you are in a support group then make sure your leader shows you IFAEA's new info card, "How to Remove Peanut Allergen Residue from Hand and Tables." IFAEA sent leaders at least 10 cards. This card shows teachers, nurses, and the kitchen staff the best way to clean off peanut allergen.

Twelve investigators have received grants totaling $5 million over two years to lead innovative studies of food allergy. The National Institutes of Health is finally realizing food allergies are a significant health issue.

HB 5338 passed both the House and the Senate but since the Senate added an amendment, the House needs to approve it. It is now in the rules committee. The only way for it to move out of the committee is for Speaker Mike Madigan to call it out of committee. Contact him and urge him to call it the next time the House is in session.

National Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Management Act has passed the House, has been read in the Senate and is in the committee on Health. Education, Labor and Pensions. Call Sen. Obama and ask him to support it.

U.K. just issued a 56-page guideline for restaurants etc. on how to handle food allergies. Great reference for food service at school.

There is a new food allergy support/advocacy group in the Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, area. We are called Food Allergy Network of Bloomington/Normal (FANofBN). The contact person is Marsha Veninga at FANofBN@yahoo.com.

Quebec Food Allergy Association released its 2008 edition of its Food Allergy Management Manuel for Restaurants and food Services.

National Institute of Health makes food allergy research recommendations.

Gurnee Dist. 50 has a new school food allergy policy. Congrats to all who worked hard. It paid off.

This is sad but not surprising. October issue of Journ. School Nursing found only 15% of students used FAAN's food allergy action plan. IFAEA thinks it's too big and complicated for ER use but IS the best out there. Let us hear your opinion. E-mail us.

Don't let your teenager or young adult be sloppy. Use IFAEA's slogan: Think AAA= Awareness, Avoidance, and Adrenaline to educate them. A 25 year old woman who knew she had a food allergy recently died because she had NO epinephrine with her.

American Academy of Pediatrics updated advice on feeding small children. Dr. Sicherer helped write the guidelines.

FDA recalls. Failure to list allergens on labels — or to keep allergens out of foods they're not supposed to be in — accounted for half the Food and Drug Administration's most serious food recalls in fiscal 2007.
